    Highlights

    • Try street food in Galle.
    • Walk down the memory lane of historic Galle.
    • Take the photographs with Stilt Fishermen.

    What to Expect

Your chauffeur will pick up from your hotel by 0700 hrs. You will arrive Galle by approximately 0900 hrs (Travel time 1 ½ to 2 hrs). Enjoy your breakfast at a place of your choice in Galle (At your own expense).

The first item in your itinerary will be Galle City Tour. At approximately 1000 hrs will walk through Galle’s historic 17C Dutch Fort - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Galle’s natural harbor has long been a hub of trade dating back to ancient times. The accidental arrival of the Portuguese Lorenzo de Almeida in 1505, when his fleet of ships steered off course following a storm at sea, changed the history of this island nation. The Portuguese were followed by the Dutch and then the British in 1796. With each occupation, Galle’s landscape changed and the cultural influences remained. Galle Fort covers nearly four sq. km and is protected by 12 bastions and connecting ramparts.

Wonder the maze of narrow cobblestone paved roadways lined with colonial period buildings still in use and old merchant houses where generations of Moorish families still live. Take a walk along the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea and visit colonial period churches, the lighthouse, and museums. Along the way, stop by for a cup of Ceylon Tea or fresh king coconut. This fascinating excursion will give you a memorable glimpse into life within Galle Fort – one of the best-preserved Colonial Forts in Asia. After a nice two and a half hours spent experiencing its glory, you will be leaving Galle at approximately 1230 hrs.

Thereafter proceed to Koggala for a meet up with stilt fishermen, who are one of the most iconic figures of Sri Lanka. (Travel time 30 to 45 minutes) You will be able to see them fishing and learn how they do it by speaking to one of the fishermen.

Thereafter at approximately 1445 hrs proceed to Tangalle city (Travel time 1 ½ to 2 hrs), which is the palm-fringed bay and picturesque coves of Tangalle are a natural treasure. Exhibiting fine beaches which are good for swimming and more than reasonable for diving, Tangalle is a popular beach destination on the south coast. It is believed that the name is derived from ran-gala or golden rock, from a legend that tells of a time when a holy man once partook of a meal there, and the rock was turned to gold whilst further research also reveals that it means the “projecting rock”, because long ago the town was protected from the ocean by a long rocky slab that projected into the sea across the mouth of the bay.

After spending a relaxing time at Tangalle beach and, you will be returning to Colombo by 1830 hrs. You will get back to your hotel at 2030 hrs completing the tour. (Travel time 2 ½ to 3 hrs)

Embark on an adventure like never before and become a part of the city with this private tour of Negombo.
The route that you will be taking is as follows,

Negombo City: Negombo is a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka, north of the capital, Colombo. Near the waterfront, the remains of the 17th Century Dutch Fort now houses a prison. Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, feeds into the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal. The canal leads south to Colombo. Neo-classical St. Mary’s Church, completed in the early 19th Century, features a ceiling decorated with vivid religious paintings.

Fish Market: Negombo is a traditional fishing town of Sri Lanka. The fishermen of the Negombo lagoon live in abject poverty in small, thatched palm houses in villages on the water’s edge. They rely on traditional knowledge of the seasons for their livelihood.

Dutch Fort: One of the most distinct tourist attractions in Negombo is undeniably the Old Dutch Fort. This is a structure with a history dating back to Sri Lanka’s colonial days when the nation was once under the rule of initially the Portuguese, and then the Dutch. The city was encircled by an earth wall. Eventually the landmass on which the Old Dutch Fort Gate was constructed, was regularly washed by the sea.

St. Mary’s Church in Negombo: The coastal town of Negombo is an area in Sri Lanka that is dominated heavily by Christian Faith and one of the town’s most important structures is St. Mary’s Church. This sacred building is lavish and grand in nature, standing tall amidst other structures in the town. The church consists of three main levels which are immediately apparent when approaching the structure from the front.

Dutch Hamilton Canal: Between 1802 and 1804, when the Island was under British governance, a new Colombo-Negombo canal was built, conceived by Garvin Hamilton, British Agent of Revenue and Commerce. The Hamilton Canal ran west of the old Dutch Canal, quite close to the sea from the mouth of the Kelani River at Hekitta, all the way to the southern edge of the Negombo Lagoon at Pamunugama; an astounding distance of 14.5 kilometers.

Upon reaching the end of tour, you will be dropped off back at your hotel at approximately 1230 hrs.

          What You Can Expect

You will be starting this tour from your hotel in Kandy at approximately  0700 hrs. Your chauffeur guide picks you up and take you on a drive along the famous 18 Bend Road to Mahiyangana. 18 Bend Road is well known for being one of the most dangerous and spectacular roads in the world. While the recent road renovations which widened the road have reduced the danger factor; the road still remains an amazing experience with dramatic views over the valley of Mahiyangana.

The next place you will visit lies within the valley and is of great archaeological value. Sorabora Wewa (also known as the Sea of Bintenna) is an ancient reservoir believed to have been constructed over two millennia ago, in the era of King Dutugemunu. Created by damming Diyawanna Oya with a 485m embankment; the reservoir uses the natural rock around it to its advantage to form a channel that acts like a sluice gate. You will be able to observe this unique sluice gate as you walk along the embankment. Your next stop along the way will be Ulhitiya Reservoir, one of the most important reservoirs in the area; formed by the damming of Ulhitiya Oya, a tributary of Mahaweli River. After learning more about the history of this reservoir, you will be continuing on to Mahiyangana. You will reach this historic city by approximately 0930 hrs.

It is said that this is the site of Lord Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka. The Mahiyangana Temple initially began its life a tiny stupa enshrining a handful of Buddha’s hair and was the very first stupa of the island. Later in 543 BC, an Arahant named Sarabhu brought the Buddha's left collar bone, recovered from his funeral pyre, and enshrined it alongside his hair whilst also enlarging the stupa to 18 feet in height. Subsequent kings continued to enlarge the stupa until it reached its current size. The temple was renovated approximately four decades ago and continues to be a peaceful and historic sight. You will be visiting this temple and learning more about it.

At approximately 1000 hrs you will be starting the hike to the Dambana Veddah village. You will get there by approximately 1030 hrs. There you will be introduced to the community of primitives and will get to see their rustic homes and lifestyles. These tribes feed themselves primarily from hunting, with a little farming added in. The hunters of the tribe will explain their innovative ways of catching prey such as rabbit, deer, and wild boar from the forests that surround the area. You may also be able to join them if they are leaving for a short hunt during the period you are there. They may let you try out their primitive longbows and arrows too. At approximately 1230 hrs you will be leaving the village and returning to Mahiyangana. Once you get there you can choose to have lunch at one of the restaurants there (At your own expense). You will then be returning to your hotel in Kandy completing your tour by approximately 1500 hrs.

            What You Can Expect

You will be starting your tour from Hingula Junction, approximately an hour west of Kandy City on Kandy Road. You can select a time beforehand while booking. The village experience will be open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, so select accordingly. There you will be met by your guide who will explain more details about your tour, including the history of the nearby Dedimunda Temple dedicated to a minor Buddhist deity. Your tour time of two hours counts from the time that you reach the village.

To get to the village you will be riding a tuk tuk (three wheeled cab) approximately 12km into the countryside. Your cabby will be taking you down narrow village lanes past rubber plantations, coconut plantations and paddy fields. The final stretch to the village can only be traversed by foot, an off-roading bike or an oxen cart. A cart will be awaiting you. After trundling across uneven trails for 10 minutes, you will reach the village.

Once you get there you will find many thatched clay huts and farming villagers. They will treat you to a welcome drink of coconut or king coconut water. Then you will be taken to see the villagers harvest coconuts by climbing up the tall smooth trees. They will then show you how they remove the husk before using the coconuts for cooking.

Next you will be taken to a villager’s home, where you can experience a village style cooking experience. The experience will include a hands-on demonstration of coconut scraping, grinding flour using a traditional millstone, roti making, and grinding spicy pol symbol on a traditional grinding stone.

On completing the lesson, you can enjoy your meal in the shade of the hut, watching village life pass you by. Then your guide will take you to a natural pool for a short dip to cool down. You can spend some free time taking a walk in the paddy fields or watching villagers at work.

At the end of your tour you will be returning to Hingula Junction with your tour guide.

            What You Can Expect

You will be starting your tour at 7:00 am. Your chauffeur guide will pick you up from your place of stay in Kandy. You can choose to have breakfast before you start, or bring your own packed breakfast. It’s also suggested that you wear covered clothing, with proper hiking boots; as there will be plenty of leeches when you hike through jungles. It may also be a good idea to bring some salt in case any of them manage to hang on. Some of the other important things to bring would be a change of clothes; in case you get your clothes wet or wish to have a bath; towels, and a bottle of water.

Your first stop will be Rahas Falls, a 15m tall waterfall that gushes down a rock crevice. It’s said that a nearby cave was once the refuge of a Sri Lankan king who was trying to hide from foreign invaders. But the most interesting part of the story is the bit of lore that says that the king revealed a hidden mysterious tunnel behind the falls by placing an umbrella in the falls. To this day the villagers in the area state that those who attempt to bath there while alone, see a strange elusive red object within the falls; and if they attempt to find it, they meet their death. You will find that Rahas Ella is very beautiful. But you will not be bathing here as the water is dangerously deep near the falls.

Second, on your itinerary will be the 75 m tall Hulu River Falls. Originating from the Knuckles mountain range; the crystal clear water from the falls ends up in the Victoria reservoir after anointing nearby villages with its spray. Surrounded by trees, bushes, and other such nature; the falls are very photogenic.

Other falls that you will see include the Sari (a traditional draped clothing worn by the women of India and Sri Lanka) shaped Sarii Ella, the 45m tall twin falls of Jodu Ella, two of three waterfalls that flow through Lebanon Tea Estate, the tiny Kosgama Falls and the 50m tall Thaliya Wetuna Falls. You will also get a chance to bathe and swim at some of the falls that are safe.

Along the way, you will stop for a traditional Sri Lankan lunch. At approximately 5 pm you will be finishing your tour; and will then be dropped off at your hotel.

              Overview

You will be starting your tour at 9:00 am from your hotel in Kandy. A vehicle with your chauffeur guide will pick you up. Be ready for a hot day with lots of walking involved.

Your first stop will be the outer precinct of the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic. While the temple itself is famous, the surrounding precinct is severely underestimated and unexplored by travelers. One of the most important things to remember is that the Temple itself was placed within the refurbished former Royal Palace of the Kandyan Kingdom. A number of other important structures, such as the Audience Chamber, were also located around this main structure. You will get to see them as part of this tour.

Next, you will be visiting the National Museum with its wealth of over 5000 artifacts collected from digs and finds around the area. It will be quite interesting to view these and listen to your guide to explain the stories behind some of the key artifacts. Next, you will be taking a walk into the woods near Kandy Lake, where you will find an old abandoned cemetery.  This is the British Garrison Cemetery. Two centuries ago, in 1817, the British colonials captured Kandy after a hard-fought battle. They lost many soldiers and had them buried in this cemetery. You can walk around this cemetery reading the epitaphs on the tombstones.

After this, you will be walking back down to Kandy Lake. This lake was artificially created by Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, who proved to be the last king of Kandy. He built it on the blood and bones of those of his subjects who objected the creation of the lake on their farming lands. Ironically, this lake came to be called the ‘Sea of Milk’. Regardless of its bloodstained history, Kandy Lake is an extremely picturesque place and you will have a boat ride on it.

Next, you will drive to Peradeniya University. Along the way, you will have stopped by Hindu Temples and other important locations for a brief look. The university is hailed as one of the most beautiful in the Asian continent. Then you will visit the Agro Technology Park in Gannoruwa. There are some many colorful plants and agricultural designs here, making it very picturesque.

You will finish off with a visit to a Handicrafts store and workshop. There will be much to see how these handicrafts are made and you can purchase some souvenirs. After this, you will be driven back to your hotel - ending your tour by 1:00 pm.

              What You Can Expect

You will be starting the tour from your hotel at 6:00 am. You will be traveling for two and a half hours to get to Panduwasnuwara. If you bring a packed breakfast, you can use the time to have it since you won’t be stopping for a break before lunch.

You will get to Panduwasnuwara at 8:30 am. The kingdom of Panduwasnuwara flourished between 504 BC and 474 BC. Believed to be established by the King Panduvasudev, the city was abandoned till the 12th century when it became known as Parakamapura. The ruins that stand today are mainly from that era. Some of the notable sights you will get to see are the ruins of the magnificent royal palace, the remains of the 297 feet wide tower with its extremely thick walls which have many legends surrounding them, the recently restored former temple of the tooth relic and Panda Wewa which is believed to be one of the very first irrigation systems built in the world.

You will travel to Yapahuwa at 10:00 pm and get there by 11:30 am. You will spend two hours viewing the 13th-century rock fortress of Yapahuwa. The fortress played the part of being the last stand of King Bhuvenakabahu when the Dravidians invaded India. He attempted to save the Holy Tooth Relic of Buddha there, but the move failed to protect it as it was stolen by the Pandyans immediately following his death. The tooth relic was recovered the year after but was placed in Polonnaruwa instead. The fortress as you see it now is a beautiful work of art with neatly carved grand staircases, interesting sculptures, and pillars. After the fall of the kingdom, the fortress was used as a monastery by Buddhist monks. The remains of the stupa that they used can still be seen on the summit of the rock. The stupa contains paintings and Buddha statues from the Kandyan era.

At 1:30 pm you will finish your visit to the fortress and go for lunch at a place of your choice. You can spend approximately an hour and a half enjoying your meal before you return back to Kandy. You will visit the Elephant Rock, ‘Ethagala’, en route. The rock which has a rough shape of an elephant has some fantastic views from the top, as well as a newly created giant Buddha statue.

You will get back to your hotel in Kandy by 6:30 pm, completing your tour.

It will take one and half hours to reach your first destination, Nalanda Gedige in Matale (Travel Time 1 ½ to 2 hrs).

Nalanda Gedige is an old Dravidian (Pallava era) structure believed to have been built between the 8th to 10th centuries. At first view, it’s an obviously Hindu temple from the detailed wall and roof architecture, to the little windowless main shrine. However, the ruins of the erotic tantric sculptures, and plain moonstone point to a more Buddhist origin. After viewing this structure and discussing it with your tour guide, you will be leaving for Euphoria Spice and Herbal Gardens at approximately 1030 hrs (Travel Time 10-15 minutes).

You will get there by 1045 hrs where you will initially receive a one hour tour of the spice and herbal gardens. It will take up to approximately 1215 hrs to get to Aluvihara, which is supposed to mean ‘light temple’ or ‘cave with light’ based on two different beliefs.  (Travel Time 25-30 minutes) Aluvihara is most famous as the place of creation of the Buddhist religious script ‘Tripitaka’. The stupa is literally built on top of a large rock. Meanwhile, the rock itself is riddled with a cave system. As of present, 13 caves have been found, with many more buried under old cave-ins. You will have to climb up and through the rock to see the historic and interesting insides of these caves and learn more about the history within.

After an interesting hour spent poring over the interesting sights, you will be leaving Aluvihara at approximately 1315 hrs and spend some time having lunch at one of the good restaurants in the area (At your own expense). Thereafter visit Sembuwatta Lake located in the Elkaduwa area. (Travel Time 1 to 1 ½ hrs) You will get there approximately by 1600 hrs. Sembuwatta is an artificial lake made from a natural spring in the area. It’s famed for its amazing views and natural swimming pool. You will be spending a relaxing hour here, allowing you to take some spectacular photos with the setting sun.

You will be leaving the lake at 1730 hrs and returning to Kandy by 1900 hrs completing your tour.

Your guide and host is a local who has been a resident of Galle his whole life, along with his ancestors. His masterful knowledge of the town and its history will show you the layers below the colorful beauty of Galle.

The natural harbor of Galle was famous as far back as 1400 BC. At that time it was one of the main ports in the world from which cinnamon was exported. The arrival of the Portuguese marked a change in the history of the town. They made Galle their headquarters and destroyed many important monuments which were in the area. The initial earth and palisade fort built by the Portuguese was expanded on by the Dutch, after their takeover of the Portuguese assets in the 17th century. The Dutch Fort was highly advanced with high stone ramparts and many bastions. They also built many other buildings for administration and residency. The Dutch made renovations to the streets and added advancements such as stormwater drains.

Today much of the Dutch fort still stands, contradicting the ravages of time. The history seeped streets of Galle retain their life and originality. You will be able to climb up to the ramparts of the fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walk through the streets. The delicate filigreed roofs and old street signs with Dutch names add to their character. Here, you will be spending an hour getting to know about sea turtles and their conservation. The best part of the hatchery is the touch pools, deep tubs of seawater with baby sea turtles swimming in them. Visitors are allowed to pick up and handle then to some extent. There are also fully matured sea turtles of different kinds, receiving treatment for various ailments or wounds.

Thereafter proceed to Balapitiya and go on a lovely Boat Safari I Madu River. (Travel Time 20 to 30 mins)

Balapitiya is a little southern town lying in marshy wetlands. The area is a high biodiversity zone that relies on the lagoon created by Madu River as it flows into the Indian Ocean. Your safari will take you on a ride down the river. You will get to see the dense mangrove forest that grows along the marshy banks of the river and the forms of wildlife that call the roots home. Your guide will also take you some of the larger free-standing islands on Madu River. On one such island, you will find an old Buddhist monastery. Cinnamon harvesting is the main employment of the people of this area.

Another attraction of the safari is the famous fish massage. This ‘massage parlor’ is a hut standing on stilts in the middle of the river. A netted in the area contains the ‘massage fish’. You will be sitting on the deck of the hut with your feet in the water, while the fish work their magic.

After this relaxing boat tour, you will be returning to Negombo by 4:00 pm. You will get back to your hotel at 6:00 pm completing the tour.

                      Overview

This tour combines culture with heritage, art and a bit of snake-charming. Visit two of Sri Lanka’s sacred Buddhist temples, the ancestral home and museum of renowned Sri Lankan author, the late Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe, visit a snake farm in Matara and explore the Japanese Peace Pagoda as you watch the calm waves of the ocean in time for a brilliant sunset.

                      What You Can Expect

You will be starting your tour at 0700 hrs from the Hotel in Galle. After being picked up by your chauffeur guide, you will begin your journey. The first segment of your tour will take you to the Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya. This sacred Buddhist temple is located 1.5 kilometers from Dikwella towards Beliatta. The main attraction of the temple is the 160-ft tall statue of seated Buddha. It is the largest statue in the whole of Sri Lanka and dates back to the late 18th Century. The temple has another section named the Tunnel of Hell. It features life-sized models of devils, demons and sinners going through the torments and horrors of hell. The temple walls show you the path towards enlightenment by depicting hundreds of comic strip representations of events in the Buddha’s life. The temple also features a clock built by a local craftsman in 1926 and was fixed at the temple. The old mechanical masterpiece works even today and rings at prayer times twice a day in the morning and evenings.

At around 1000 HRS, after your tour of Wewurukannala Temple, your next stop would be at the Weherahena Poorwarama Raja Maha Viharaya. The Weherahena Poorwarama Temple is situated in the Matara District of Sri Lanka, about 6 kilometers off the Matara town. This rather unique temple is known as the first tunnel temple in the world. The temple hosts a massive 130-ft Buddha image that was built following the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras.

At around 1230 hrs after completion of your tour of the Wewrukannala Temple, you will have reached the Matara Snake Farm. For three generations, this farm was run by the Bandara family. Mr. Wikman Bandara, 40 years of age is the man in charge. His father, 76-year-old Wijepala Bandara practices Ayurvedic Snake Medicine. The Snake Farm will give you the chance to learn about the cold-blooded reptiles that roam the island and also a first-hand experience with some of the snakes if you are brave enough for the challenge.

At around 1430 hrs after lunch along the way (at your own cost), you will visit the Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe Ancestral Home and Folk Museum. Known as one of the most influential authors of his time, his work has been translated and sold across the world. His literary works have been considered masterpieces among Sri Lankan literature, and the museum and ancestral home pay homage to this great man. A private tour of the entire property will depict the story of the late Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe.

Upon completion of the tour of the Mr. Martin Wickramasinghe house and museum, proceed to Unawatuna (you will reach the location by 1630 – 1700 hrs). Your final segment will be at the Japanese Peace Pagoda. It is a beautiful shrine with an amazing view of the ocean. It can be spotted from the Unawatuna beach and from Rumassala Hill. This area is known as the Jungle Beach because of its natural beauty; a secluded coastal line emerging from the forest lands that surround it. The Japanese Peace Pagoda was built by the Nipponzan-Myōhōji order. It is a monument designed to inspire peace among all races and creeds.
