What you can expect

You will be meeting up at the visitor center of the Horton Plains National Park at 7:30 am. You will get a presentation with the necessary route and safety information. You will be starting your hike at 7:45 am.

You’ll be passing through Horton Plains National Park, a protected area in Pattipola which is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Sri Lanka. The park’s entrance fee is included in your hiking package. The Horton Plains National Park has a variety of mammals such as sambar, chevrotain, wild boar, fishing cat, purple-faced langurs, and many others. As one of the Important Bird Areas of Sri Lanka, it also has a large number of bird species, including some rare and endemic. If you are quiet enough you might get to see some of them. You will also pass through a section of the park with many springs, which mark the birth of some of the largest rivers of the country.

After some time on the trail, you will find yourself climbing up Kirigalpoththa. Standing at 2388m tall, it is the second tallest mountain in the country. It is also the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, which the public is allowed to climb. The entire trek is approximately 7km long and takes about five to six hours to hike. The terrain and weather can be treacherous and cause difficulties, causing one in nine hikers to fail in reaching the summit. You will have to pass through bogs, swamps, and high undergrowth, and ford over rivers or cross slippery rock surfaces. Do not stray from the trail that your hiking guide leads you on.

You will have a qualified first aid officer accompanying you. There will also be a backup vehicle for emergency transport following you as far as possible.

You will have breaks every 1.5 km, allowing you to refresh yourself with an energy bar and water. You will be reaching the summit by 12:15 pm to enjoy the panoramic views spread out like a feast for your eyes. After a photograph session, you will be having a picnic lunch. The meal is part of your hiking package and will include a pasta such as spaghetti or macaroni, a boiled egg, fried sausages, and tropical fruits.

Once lunch is completed, you will be returning using the same trail that you used earlier. You will be leaving at 1:15 pm. You will be able to return to the trail head by 5:30 pm, completing your hike.

Railroad Hike to Horton Plains Borders (Private + Guided)

Enjoy walking through the third-largest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka with its amazing, wet zone on one end and dry zone on the other, properties. Have a strenuous hike through the jungle. (SKU: LK60070500)

Overview

Hike along the railroads in Pattipola for some distance before passing through the jungle and hiking towards Horton Plains. Enjoy walking through the third-largest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka with its amazing, wet zone on one end and dry zone on the other, properties. Have a strenuous hike through the jungle. Move on through the beautiful Ohiya area to reach the borders of Horton Plains. Take some photos of breathtaking views. This tour also includes lunch and refreshments. Get challenged with nature and architecture. This hike is recommended from January to March but is also available from July to August.

What you can expect

You will be starting your Railroad Hike at 7:30 am from the Pattipola Railway Station. The station itself is special in that it is the highest railway station in Sri Lanka, lying 1891m above sea level. Your hiking guide will be giving you a brief description of the hike and route. He will explain the safety procedures as well. You will be leaving for your hike at 7:45 am.

The entire hike will be 14km long. You will be stopping for breaks every 1.5km to refresh yourselves with energy bars and water. You will have a qualified hiking guide and first aid professional in your team. There will also be an emergency transport vehicle following you. After hiking 3km along the railroads, you will be coming upon the ‘tunnel of importance’, Tunnel 18. Tunnel 18 is the third-longest railway tunnel in Sri Lanka at 321.95 m. It is also highest from sea level, and the darkest as one end is quite narrow.

However, the special feature about the tunnel and its secret lies in its location. Tunnel 18 is perfectly placed to bridge the border between the wet zone and the dry zone of Sri Lanka. This means that you enter the tunnel during comparatively dry and clear weather and exit the tunnel into mist and rain. In Sri Lanka, the only place this magical experience occurs is at Tunnel 18. The views from the tunnel mouths are also spectacular.

After passing through Tunnel 18 you will be walking a few kilometers further along the railroad before reaching the Ohiya Railway Station. You will be getting there by approximately 1:00 pm and will be having a picnic lunch at the station. Lunch will consist of spaghetti or macaroni, a boiled egg, fried sausages, and tropical fruits.

After lunch, you will start your trek to Horton Plains National Park. You will be first climbing through the jungle for the first 2km. This part of the hike will be somewhat strenuous. After exiting the jungle you will be hiking through the Ohiya area which lies next to Horton Plains National Park. The area sports some of the best scenic views in Sri Lanka. You will be stopping along the way for some evening refreshments, such as chocolate slabs, dates and etc.

After the break and possibly a few photographs, you will be continuing on to Horton Plains National Park borders. You will reach your final destination at 5:00 pm, completing your hike.

Hiking in Knuckles Mountain Range (Private + Guided)

Knuckles Mountain Forest Range consists of a range of vegetation types that have resulted from diverse climatic and topographic conditions. (SKU: LK60022100)

Overview

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resembles the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning mist-laden mountain range. Knuckles Mountain Forest Range covering an area of approximately 21,000 ha is a part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site, declared in 2010. Though it is a part of Central Highlands it is well separated by Mahaweli river valley from the sides of South and east and Matale valley from the west.

Knuckles Mountain Forest Range consists of a range of vegetation types that have resulted from diverse climatic and topographic conditions. Among these are the humid tropical lowland semi-evergreen forest, tropical sub-montane humid evergreen forest, montane grassland (patana) and pygmy forest. The complexity brought to the area with vegetation types is further increased by a range of modifications made to the landscape by people since the British colonization. Knuckles Mountain Forest Range supports a rich biological diversity with 128 species of birds, 20 species of amphibians, 53 species of reptiles, 15 freshwater species and 31 mammal species. All species are not equally distributed throughout the range. Their distribution depends on multiple factors such as food availability, availability of nesting sites, etc. that vary with climate, elevation and land cover.

Explore Belilena Caves from Kitulgala

This tour gives you the chance to see the famous Archeological Reserve, the Belilena Caves. (SKU: LK60100300)

What You Can Expect

The word speleology, describes the exploration, surveying, mapping and photographing of caves, which is performed by the scientific community. These caves are home to a great variety of creatures that are nocturnal in their habits and most of the recently discovered species are from caves that have been around for at least 500 million years. These caves especially the Belilena Cave in Sri Lanka abound with stalactites and stalagmites, formations of conical calcium deposits sometimes as tall as a small child

This captivating activity is relatively new to Sri Lanka and is rather an unusual experience not to be missed. Sri Lanka is dotted all over with many caves from the Ritigala mountains in the north to the central hills and the southern hillocks of the South. The most famous being Batatotalena at sudugala, attributed to the “Balangoda man” a prehistoric man whose skeletal remains were uncovered inside this cave, Belilena in Kithulgala and aptly named “Wavulpone” because of the large community of bats living inside with some records indicating a figure as high as hundred thousand.

Kitulgala is a small town located in the west of Sri Lanka. It is in the wet zone rain forest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country. Nevertheless, it comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month. The Academy Award-winning
The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge (and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene). Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting.

Sri Lanka’s most recently discovered bird, the Serendib scops owl was originally heard calling by Deepal Warakagoda in these forests. The hills above the rubber plantations also have mountain hawk-eagle, crested treeswift and Layard’s parakeet.

Belilena is a very large cave, in which the 12,000-year-old skeletal remains of the prehistoric ‘Balangoda man’ (Homesepiens Balangodensis) have been found. In order to reach the cave, you have to walk through the jungle, close to the Inoya estate (approx. 8 km from Kitulgala itself).

Located 2000 feet above sea level, the Belilena Cave lies amidst picturesque environs close to Kitulagala. Recent archaeological excavations conducted at the cave have unearthed several fossils believed to be more than 32,000 years old.

The part of the cave beyond the lake that fills it a short way from its mouth still remains unexplored to this day.

This Huge Cave has been home to the prehistoric ‘Balangoda Man’ (Homo sapiens balangodensis) where 16,000-year-old skeletal remains have been found. Fa Hien-lena has yielded the earliest evidence (at ca. 37,000 BP) of the ‘Balangoda Man’ followed by Batadomba-lena at 31,000 and 18,000 BP.

These caves have also yielded other artifacts such as prehistoric tools belonging to the 30,000 BP. Batadomba-lena caves have yielded tools going back to 31,000 BP. These are important findings to the whole of Asia as these tools are considered to have first originated in Europe around 12,000 BP.

The Homo sapiens balangodensis or the Balangoda Man refers to hominins from Sri Lanka’s late Quaternary period. The earliest evidence of Balangoda Man from archaeological sequences at caves and other sites dates back to 38,000 BP, and from excavated skeletal remains to 30,000 BP, which is also the earliest reliably dated record of anatomically modern humans in South Asia. Cultural remains discovered alongside the skeletal fragments include geometric microliths dating to 28,500 BP, which together with some sites in Africa is the earliest record of such stone tools.

Other discoveries include various plants and animals that are thought to have formed part of their diet, e.g. wild banana, breadfruit, and fish bones, and articles that were used as personal ornaments such as shell pendants and shark beads, indicating occasional contact with the coast around 40 km away.

The Balangoda Man is estimated to have had thick skulls, prominent supraorbital ridges, depressed noses, heavy jaws, short necks, and conspicuously large teeth. Metrical and morphometric features of skeletal fragments extracted from cave sites that were occupied during different periods have indicated a rare biological affinity over a time frame of roughly 16,000 years, and the likelihood of a biological continuum to the present-day Vedda indigenous people.

This is not surprising given the relative geographical isolation of the island until the fifth century BC when settlers arrived from the Indian mainland. Veddas are therefore relevant to the question of the degree of the relative isolation of ancient and modern Homo sapiens in Sri Lanka from populations of
southern India.

Heeloya Village Hike via Rangala (Private + Guided)

This half day hike through verdant forests and hills takes you to the traditional Sri Lankan of Heeloya. Get to experience the olden day customs that are still alive within this village that deep in the hills of Kandy.(SKU: LK74220000)

Overview

This half day hike through verdant
forests and hills takes you to the traditional Sri Lankan of Heeloya. Get to
experience the olden day customs that are still alive within this village that
deep in the hills of Kandy. Traipse through paddy fields and visit waterfalls.
Become a part of village life as you help your host with the cooking. Enjoy a
delightful village lunch with all the local delicacies. Make some lasting photographic
memories of your day spent at Heeloya.

What you can expect

You will be meeting up with your guide, at 7:30 am, at the trail
head towards Heeloya Village. You will receive instructions on how to get there
once you confirm your participation. It is suggested that you wear waterproof
shoes with a good grip as the trail can get quite muddy when rain showers
occur. Your guide will initially explain the route and give you a brief on the
activities you will engage in.

You will begin your hike at 8:00 am. The trail will be quite
narrow and only traversable by foot or a bike. You will pass scrubby hills and
light woods. There will also be occasional small houses surrounded step
cultivated paddy fields as you get closer to the village. You will have regular
rest stops when your guide will ensure that you’re refreshed with water and
energy bars.

You will get to the village at approximately 9:00 am. Heeloya is
a solitary agricultural village surrounded by the hills of the Central
Highlands. It has very little communication with the outer world and the entire
village is very self-sustaining. The food of the villagers comes from paddy
fields, home grown vegetable gardens, farm animals, and the river nearby. They
also grow their own spices and herbs and practice crafts such as toddy tapping
and bee-keeping. The village continues to maintain its traditional customs,
including justice being met by the village head - instead of the central
judiciary system.

Once you get there, you will be introduced to the village elder
who will tell you more about the traditional customs of the village. A farmer
will take you to the paddy fields and tell you more about the step cultivation
method. This method maximizes the space of the slopes and enables the rainfall
to equally benefit all the crops. Most of the paddy fields around Heeloya are
step cultivated. You will also be taken to see the fruit orchards and vegetable
gardens, where you will help harvest some fresh fruits and vegetables for your
lunch.

You will then return to the home which is hosting you at the
village and hand over the harvest. After this you can stay and watch them cook,
or visit the spice gardens and the waterfall nearby. In any case, you will get
a good experience of the villagers' lives and there will be many scenic
opportunities for photographs too.

Lunch will be at 12:00 and will be served on fragrant banana
leaves. The food will be delicious and spicy, embodying the traditional flavors
of rural Sri Lanka. After a wonderful meal, you will be taking a few minutes of
rest and then hiking back to the base of the Knuckles range. Your tour will be

Situated between the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts, at an expanse of 225 kilometers from the capital city of Colombo, this forest experiences rainfall of 1650mm – 2150mm each year. The Park is bordered by the Amban River, Mahaweli River, Wasgamuwa Village and the Kalu Ganga (River) in the North, East, South, and West and was declared a National Park in the year 1984. According to the census report in 2011, there are over 360 Elephants in Wasgamuwa. Being a Dry Zone Park, the Wasgamuwa National Park is home to over 150 floral species, many of them endemic. The park also houses 23 species of mammals and over 140 species of birds and a number of reptile species as well. The park is known for its hordes of elephants that you may see especially in the evenings. The Marsh Elephant is a subspecies that can only be seen near the Mahaveli River. • Habarana and Sigiriya – 4:45 am
                • Dambulla – 5:00 am
                • Kandalama – 5:15 am

The times may differ according to the location of the hotel where you are staying. Hot air balloons were the first successful human-flight technology, and have been around since the late 18th century. Their continued success is due to the opportunity they provide to relax and enjoy the sights, and the challenges they provide for those more adventurous in harnessing the winds. The technology used in hot air balloons has advanced immensely in the last couple of centuries, giving their riders better safety and smoother flights.

Your Hot Air Balloon Ride will take you on a soothing flight over the Kandalana and Dambulla areas. You will be afforded with marvelous views of the sunrise and the brightening landscape below. Your pilot will point out important landmarks such as the Kandalama Tank, the Golden Buddha statue, Sigiriya and many others. You will need to wear closed-toed shoes, with a cap or hat. For the rest of your attire, comfortable casual clothes work best. However it may get slightly colder at higher altitudes, so bringing a light sweater or scarf may be advisable. Your flight will last between an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the wind directions and where you will be landing.

                Highlights

                • Equipment provided
                • Waterfall Abseiling at Hadunella

                Overview

You will start your tour at 9:00 am from the Kithulgala Adventure Sports Center. Transport will be provided to the location where your activity will happen (from the Kithulgala Adventure Sports Center). The equipment will be provided, as will be your instructor and support crew. You will also get a bottle of water to quench your thirst whilst abseiling

The Hadunella is a 110m tall waterfall with an almost vertical drop. Based on the Kithulgala highland area, the waterfall is ideal for many adventure sports activities. Waterfall abseiling, or Waterfall Rappelling as it is also called is a sport where you descend from the top of the fall using ropes passed through carabiners and secured at the top. The descent is controlled entirely by you. So a judicious use of your legs and the ropes are necessary to complete abseiling the waterfall

You will be enjoying climbing down the waterfall. The misty spray in your eyes, the stress of knowing that danger lurks in every misstep you may make and the deep mysterious jungle all combine to make this experience memorable for life. The triumph you feel after the adrenaline rush when you get the top sends you a blast of endorphins that will leave you happy and self-confident for weeks. You will be finishing your session by 11:30 am and will be driven back to the adventure sports center completing your trip.

                • Confidence Jump.
                • Rock/Stream sliding.

                Overview

Your adventure starts at approximately 0900 hrs at the Kithulgala adventure sports center. Kitulgala lies on the banks of the Kelani River at a point where it shallow but flows quite fast, creating rapids. These have allowed for many types of adventure and water sports. Canyoning is one of them.

Canyoning involves traversing descents using various methods; such as hiking, rappelling, abseiling, climbing and technical jumps. Canyoning in waterfalls is often preferred as the cushioning of water reduces the risk of getting hurt.

You will be taking a 2km hike to the location, where you will be doing the canyoning. The rainforest in Kithulgala is deep, dense and green; and very beautiful. You may get to glimpses of the wildlife while passing by.

Once you get there you will start your activities. The equipment such as safety jackets, rope and etc will be provided.  You will also have instructors and a support crew accompanying you; who will be able to assist you with the basics and guide you during the activities.

You will be able to try sliding over slightly sloping, wet and smooth rock surfaces; which function as natural waterslides. You will also be able to try cliff jumping with proper safety in place. This will help you boost your confidence

But the most exciting activity of them is the waterfall rappelling. The sport involves ropes threaded through carabiners and attached to your waist. You will descend the waterfall with the assistance of a rope while controlling your speed of descent.

After taking part in these activities, you will hike back to the adventure sports center. The tour will be completed by 1230 hrs, and you can choose to have lunch (at your own expenses) at the center's restaurant.
