Slave Island: A suburb of Colombo that was once a place of horror where African slaves were held during the Portuguese and Dutch rule of Sri Lanka. Some of the residents still have traces of African ancestry.

Grand Oriental Hotel: A 19th Century Colonial Building converted into a hotel, it has a scenic view of the Colombo Harbor and Galle Face Green.

          Overview

Go on a half-day cycling tour to three of Kandy’s most famous temples. Visit the ancient monastery of Gadaladeniya. Get to see the Lankathilaka Temple, the most magnificent edifice of the Gampola Era. Marvel at the delicate wood-crafting of Embekke Temple. Enjoy the brilliant green countryside along the way.

          What to Expect

Your tour will start at 8:30 am at the University of Peradeniya, in Kandy. You will be joined by an experienced cycling guide who will explain the attractions during the tour. Mountain bikes and helmets, as well as a bottle of water for the ride, will be waiting for you at the startup point. Please wear proper shoes to avoid injuring yourself during this long cycling tour. Also, ensure that that you have breakfast before beginning your tour as you won’t be stopping for it.

You will be doing the first stretch of the tour to Gadaladeniya within 45 minutes. A short break will be included. Once you get there you will find yourself at an ancient temple with strong South Indian influences. The reason for this is that the architect was brought in from South India. While there you can view the giant golden Buddha statue, and take note of the unique design with the main stupa and four smaller satellite stupas surrounding it.

After a twenty-minute tour, you will be traveling to Lankathilaka Temple. You will get there at approximately 10:00 am, where you will find yourself at a palatial structure built on natural rock. Once a four-storied edifice, now only three floors remain of the original building. Built during the 14th century, this is yet another Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple built by South Indian architect. The influence is seen in the delicately designed ornamental arches and Hindu Temple-like exterior wall design. Don’t forget to see the beautiful paintings of the image house and the rock inscriptions on the bedrock of the temple.

The final place in your schedule will be the Embekke Temple. This place is a wonderful treat to the eyes, as it is covered in carvings. All its wooden sections (which are quite a lot considering that the temple is almost completely made of wood) are decorated with detailed and delicate woodwork, that makes Embekke the most famous example for ancient Sri Lanka’s wood crafting skills. Among the best masterpieces on the capital pillars are the Hansa Puttuwa (entwined swans), the double-headed eagles, entwined rope designs, a mother breastfeeding her child design, a soldier fighting on horseback, female dancing figures, wrestlers, women emanating from a vein, a bird-man figure, elephant-bull, and the elephant-lion figure. In total there are over 500 unique designs among these carvings. You will also be shown the unique architecture used in the wooden rafters.

After feasting on the beauty of Embekke, you will be returning to the University of Peradeniya, where you started. You will get there by 12:30 pm. Completing your tour.3

There will also be some palmyra products made by local ladies for sale.

Finally, your route will take you to a small Buddhist stupa, past the statue of Changkili - the last king of the Jaffna Kingdom, the Entrance Arch of the former Jaffna Royal Palace, the haunting ruins of the old house of the last king’s Minister. Along the way back to your start point, you will bet stopping at a viewpoint to watch the sunset and take some photographs (given that it is a clear day). About Polonnaruwa Ruins Ride Cycling Tour

The tour gives you the wonderful opportunity to enjoy viewing the remnants of the ancient Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Wander amongst the ruins of the second largest kingdom of old and get to know more about them. Cycle to the beautiful Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama) and listen to its history. View the clean green countryside of Polonnaruwa and feel more relaxed. Finish off with a refreshing king coconut drink.

                Overview

You will be starting your cycling tour at 9:00 am at the entrance of the old city of Polonnaruwa. The city carries history from over a millennia ago. Though it existed on a smaller scale before; the city truly flourished between the 11th century and 13th century AD, when it was the capital of the country. The city was architecturally advanced and the ruins found in this UNESCO World Heritage Site today rival that of ancient cities such as Angkor and Egypt.

You will be starting your tour with a visit to the ruins of King Parakramabahu Is Palace which was a magnificent 12th-century edifice that rose to seven stories. You can still see the remains of the central wall which supported over 40 interconnected rooms and the bottom section of the structure.

In line with this monument is the Council Chamber built by the same king, who was an amazing engineer. The perfectly designed Chambers had such good acoustics that you could hear the speaker in any corner of the room. The base of the chamber and some of the pillars still stand, and you will be able to observe the fine stone craft used on the outer wall carvings.

You will also view the mysterious Satmahal Prasada (otherwise known as Seven Storied Edifice), whose makers are unknown. The stepped pyramid style building bears resemblances to Mayan and Angkor stepped pyramids. The Atadage and Hatadage, the first and second Sacred Tooth Relic Shrines of Polonnaruwa, will also place you will pass on your bike.

The Gal Vihara Rock Sculptures are a very important destination of your tour which displays some of the best artistry of the Polonnaruwa period in its three giant statues; the standing, seated and reclining Buddhas which were carved from solid granite. The carvings were so beautifully done, with detailed expressions that stone crafters afterward were unable to match the perfection of these statues.

Some of the other things you will get a chance to see are the vaulted halls of the wonderfully preserved Thuparama; Rankoth Vihara which is the biggest pagoda in Polonnaruwa; the Shiva Temple built by the Cholas who invaded in the 10th century; and the famous Vatadage of Polonnaruwa with its circular structure, embellished guard stones, carved balustrades and central stupa surrounded by Buddha statues at the cardinal points.

After viewing the ruins in the old city, you will be pedaling to the Parakrama Samudra, again a creation of the formerly mentioned illustrious monarch. The vast reservoir which was built to preserve and make use of every drop of rain still remains an extremely impressive feat even today. The reservoir boasts some wonderful views that you can enjoy while visiting it. Later you will pedal back to your starting point enjoying the green countryside and many toque macaque monkeys that live in the area. You will finish off your tour by 12:00 pm with a fresh and cooling king coconut drink.

About The Ancient City of Anuradhapura Cycling Tour

This tour takes you the oldest city of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura. Feel the weight of two millennia in the ruins of the city, which was grand in its heyday. Hear the local legends and stories about Anuradhapura. Cycle by the beautiful Tissawewa reservoir. View the majestic Jetavanaramaya, which was one of the tallest monuments of the Ancient World. See Anuradhapura as you have never seen it before

                Overview

Your tour will be starting at the embankment of Tissa Wewa, at 8:00 am. You will be met by your cycling guide and provided with bicycles and helmets as well as refreshments for the ride. The artificial reservoirs were created in the 3rd century BC by King Devanampiyatissa and is the third oldest manmade reservoir in Sri Lanka. The embankment of Tissa Wewa is 2 miles long and 25 feet tall. You will be able to cycle along the embankment enjoying the view.

From Tissa Wewa you will be biking to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura City, where all the ancient monuments and ruins are. Your guide will tell you many native stories and legends about Anuradhapura along the way. En route to the city, you will be stopping by the Isurumuniya Temple which was also built by King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC. This temple is the location of many famous stone carvings that you will get to see; including the Isurumuniya Lovers, the Royal Family, and the Elephant Bathing carving by the pond outside. The carvings range from various centuries, showing this to have been a place where art and religion combined.

Once you get to the Anuradhapura Ruins you will first view the Abhayagiri Stupa, which was part of massive Abhayagiri Monastery. The Stupa was the second-largest brick structure in the world after Jetavanaramaya. You will be able to see the elaborate moonstones and the reclining buddha. You will also be able to see the famous giant Samadhi Buddha statue and the beautifully designed Twin Ponds (Kuttam Pokuna) which were also part of the Abhayagiri Monastery.

Another important part of the Abhayagiri Monastery that you will be seeing is the Lankarama Stupa. The ancient ruins show that it would have been a vatadage, based on the evidence of pillars and a stupa house. Nothing else is known about this stupa that was built in the 1st century BC. You will see the site marked by a small stupa built fairly recently.

After the Abhayagiri monastery area, you will be visiting Jetavana Pagoda. Jetavanaramaya was built in the 4th century AD and was the largest brick structure of the ancient world. Jetavana remains an impressive sight with carved bas reliefs, high arches, and beautifully shaped lotus pedestals.

The next sight to be seen is the Ruwanwelisaya Pagoda which was built in the end century BC. It was the second-largest stupa after the above mentioned two stupas. The pagoda is the oldest that is still in use, and you can see pilgrims worshipping here. You will see plenty of elephant sculptures here; from the full-sized elephant sculptures in the outer wall to the old stone elephants in the base of the stupa.

There are also many other monuments that you may visit in Anuradhapura based on time constraints. Your tour will be concluded outside the ancient city by 12 pm.

The most valuable archaeological monument of this village is the Gal Massa (dolmen) - a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb that usually dates from the Neolithic era and consists of two or more vertical megaliths supporting a horizontal capstone. The dolmen at Padavigampola is the only known such example in Sri Lanka. There is also a large rock face near the village with caves tunneled into it during the time of the ancient king Walagamba. Your guide will take you on a detailed tour, where you will get to see all these and more. These historical marvels will give you a better understanding of the ancient heritage of Sri Lanka.

Afterward, you will visit one of the local farmers who will take you on a visit to his paddy fields. He will explain more about rice cultivation and you will also get to know more about the other crops planted locally. Once you get back you will find a delicious indigenous herbal meal waiting for you. You will find that the entire wholesome meal comprises of the harvested rice, local produce, and fish from the river nearby. Slow-cooked over a wooden fire the food is infused with a wonderful smoky flavor and is served on lotus leaves over a woven tray.

After a relaxing meal, you will have some time left when you can find your own entertainment. There are activities galore for you to do. You can go for a short bike ride or hike, or simply sit down and start a conversation with a villager with the assistance of your guide. There may be singing and dancing as evening falls too.

At approximately 1530 hrs you will be leaving the village and cycling back. Your guide will drop you off back at the town of Pinnawala or at your hotel as per your choice.

the statue of Buddha” And this is exactly what it is. Seven figures are carved in this rock plus a massive 51 foot Buddha statue. Although there is no documented information about this site in the ancient scriptures, different historians have dated these statues from the 6th century to the late Anuradhapura period (between the 8th and 10th century). These carvings are in the Mahayana Buddhist style and belong to the Pallawa Sri Lankan art tradition. Next stop is the Handapanagala Reservoir. It has a length of 9.2 kilometers and borders on Lunugamvehera National park. From here we will 4WD you back to the resort.

                    Overview

You will be starting your cycling ride at 9:00 am at the Nuwara Eliya Racecourse. You will be accompanied by a cycling guide and backup vehicle. There will be regular breaks where you will be provided with water and refreshments. Nuwara Eliya is a city which was once the highland holiday resort of the British. Many British lords and ladies of the colonial era, visited the cool hills of Nuwara Eliya during the heights of summer in Britain. They created quaint little cottages, colorful gardens and large colonial mansions. Their legacy still remains making the city one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka.

The race course of Nuwara Eliya is the last active horse racing arena left in Sri Lanka. Standing at 1868m above sea level, it is also one of the highest horse racing courses in the world. The course was built in 1900, though racing was officially inaugurated there in 1875. You will be able to cycle along the 9 furlong (1800m) race track, with its 333m straight stretch.

After this you will be visiting Lake Gregory. The area where Nuwara Eliya is now, was once dominated by a swampy bog due to a stream. The lake was created by the Governor at the time Sir William Gregory when he had a stream dammed to create more stable land for construction. The lake later became a popular region for romantic courtships. Cycling by the lake will show you its serene beauty with misty hills in the backdrop.

Your next destination would be the golf club. The 18 hole golf course was built in the late 19th century and is one of the oldest golf courses in the country. A private golf club runs it nowadays. You will be able to enjoy watching its finely landscaped greens and challenging course.

While biking through the city one of the most prominent buildings you will pass is the old red brick post office with its little clock tower. The post office too hails from the colonial era and sells some nice and inexpensive picture postcards, that you can take home as a souvenir if you so wish.

The Seetha Amman temple is just 5km away from the city and is an important place you will visit. The site is said to have been the place where Sita, wife of Lord Rama from the lHindu iterary epic Ramayana, was imprisoned by the Sri Lankan King Ravana who kidnapped her. You will be able to see the traditional Hindu temple that has been constructed at the site in respect to her as a goddess. If you have time left you may also visit a colonial era church in Nuwara Eliya. You will return to the race course in the city by 12:00 pm completing your tour.
