About Whale and dolphin watching Trincomalee

The largest mammals on our planet travel in pods and follow a matriarchal system similar to elephants. Off the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, you can often encounter super pods containing as many as 40 or more as well as large numbers of Spinner Dolphins.

Sri Lanka is considered to be one of the best places in the world for whale and dolphin watching while as many as 26 of the 80 species of cetaceans recorded around the world are also found in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.

          • Trincomalee is celebrated as one of the most picturesque coastal areas in Sri Lanka with its white sandy beaches and blue waters. The best season to visit Trincomalee is between May and October.
          • This coastal city boasts a history that spans over 2500 years during which it has been used as one of the country’s and region’s primary centers of sea trade as a result of its strategic positioning on the Indian Ocean.

                Overview

You will be starting your deep sea fishing adventure from the Negombo piers. If you select the morning session you will begin at 0600 hrs, and an evening session will be at 1430 hrs. Your boat will be a 15 foot standard local fishermans boat. It satisfies all the basic requirements, but doesnt have any advanced features. If you wish for such, you can opt for a professional fishing boat for a separate charge. You will also be provided with good sport fishing equipment and bait.

The waters around Negombo are rich and teeming with fish. This is why the area has a fishing industry that is not only the biggest in the country; but also one of the oldest. However, there are some seasons when the catch rate is much better; mainly February to April and October to December.

The fishing have of Negombo allows three modes; to fish in the deep sea, the lagoon or inland. Of these deep sea one is the most popular for of sport, due to its challenges and better yield. There are two methods used of fish deep sea; trolling and anchor fishing. Trolling is where one or more fishing lines or nets with bait or lures, is trailed behind a moving boat or manually moved from side to side. This method is very successful, especially in the morning hours. The other method is anchor fishing, which involves the boat being anchored to a stationary object such as a coral reef or rocky area and the lines being cast. This method works well at any time of the day, but especially at night.

You will be able to use the trolling or anchor fishing according to the session time you choose. Your local fishing guide will show you some of the best spots to fish. Some of the species of fish you will be able to catch are Barracuda, Seer, Great Travilly and Queen Fish in moderately deep water; and Sailfish, Blue or Black Marlene, Tuna and Wahoo in much deeper waters. You can exercise both your patience and strength as you wait for the bait to do its work, and feel the delicious struggle of reeling them in.

As you fish, refreshments will be available for you to sate your hunger and thirst. Your tour will be be completed at 0900 hrs if it was the morning session, and 1800 hrs if it was the evening one. You can also round out the day by getting your catch grilled at a small added charge and enjoy a wonderful meal with a couple of ice cold beers.

Please note: Do not forget to bring caps and sunscreen lotion to avoid getting sunburnt.

Mirissa has a lot of aquatic life around its area. The fishing industry there is highly developed. However, if you wish to maximize your yield the months between November to February would be the time to go fishing there.

There are two types of fishing methods used in Mirissa. Fishing by trolling is moving boats drag one or more fishing lines or nets behind them to provide a more realistic and lifelike target as bait. Trolling is highly successful, especially in the morning hours.

The other method is night fishing. Many fish species are strictly nocturnal, going into hiding in the light of the morning to escape predators. Night fishing uses the quiet darkness to lure unsuspecting prey. Night fishing is only done after 6 pm but produces very high yields.

If you choose one of the daytime sessions you will be using trolling. Your local fishing guide will show you some of the best spots to fish. You can exercise both your patience and strength as you wait for the bait to do its work, and feel the delicious struggle of reeling them in.

You will be catching Mullet, Spangled Emperor, Long Face Emperor, Sharp tooth Job Fish, Blubberlip Snapper, Mangrove Red Snapper, Blackspot Snapper, Malabar Grouper, Wavy-lined Grouper, Coral Hind, Sri Lanka Sweetlips, Thread-fin Bream, Parrot Fishes, Rabbitfish and Barracudas.

                          Overview

Handapanagala Reservoir is 16 km from Wallawaya town. There is a rock plain on the either side of the dam. It is full of water throughout the year – fed by the Kirindi Oya river.

The inland fishery industry is big around these parts. You’ll surely see some locals fishing for dinner. Good luck. The reservoir is popular among locals and foreigners alike as an elephant watching place.

Elephants gather at the reservoir every evening. For this reason dusk is the best time to visit Handapanagala Reservoir. Any time is a good time to bird watch at the reservoir. There are dozens of birds in and around the water. Probably also looking for their dinner.

                          • Seasonal tours from November to April

                          Overview

You will start your tour at the Lavendish Beach Resort, Unawatuna, where you will be met by your guide at 0900 hrs. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment. If you are a diver certified by PADI (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors), you may dive alone. However if you arent you will have to go through the basic training session provided by our instructors and will be accompanied by them on your dive; regardless of experience. This is to give you a safe and memorable holiday experience.

Unawatuna has five main dive sites. Two of these are ship wrecks. The SS Orestes, which is also mistakenly called the Tango Wreck, is believed to have sunk in 1875 after it struck the Gindura Reef. This wreck is a popular site for beginning divers and holiday visitors. It lies 24 m deep and has many fish that live within it.

The SS Rangoon is a more scenic sight, although it is much deeper at 32 m. The wreck is that of a century old British steamer and lies in an upright position on a smooth sandy section of the sea floor. The wreck has a lot of colorful sea-life and is a great site to take underwater photos.

The others are reefs and rocky formations. The Napoleon Reef and Talpe Reef have some amazing and rare fish, as beautiful colorful corals that are really worth seeing. The final place known as Galu Gala is a deep sea dive site that is still being explored, and will not be visited on this tour unless you are a certified diver diving independently. This site has many possibilities but not many details are known as of yet.

You may visit one or more of the first four dive sites in your two to three hour tour. A bottle of water will be provided to quench your thirst while engaging in this adventure sports activity.Your diving instructor will show and explain the best sights to you while you are underwater. The visibility is usually quite good, but it is to be noted that it is dependent on weather conditions. As such your tours will take place between November to April, when the weather has a higher chance to be clearer.

                              Important Facts

                              • Pigeon Island, a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers, is a national marine park and the second marine sanctuary in Sri Lanka and is situated off Nilaveli beach in the Indian Ocean, approximately two kilometres away from the shore. It is considered to be one of the most iconic and important tourist attractions along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. It was first declared a sanctuary in 1963 and upgraded to a national marine park under in 2003
                              • The park consists of two islands and is the only national park in the country to harbour a colony of the beautiful blue rock pigeons and contains some of the best remaining coral reefs in the country. There are around 100 types of coral reefs and 178 species of fish on this island. This is where many an observer would find both the juvenile and adult Black Tip Reef Shark as well as a variety of turtles such as the Hawksbill, the Green Turtle and the Olive Ridley
                              • Historically, the British army used this island as a place for shooting practice during the world war
                              • The Pigeon Island National Marine Park consists of around five hectares of land area and about 1000 metres radius into the sea with the coral reef as the national park boundary (471.429 hectares). In 2002, the island was opened for tourism and is visited by large groups of local and foreign visitors
                              • If you can climb up the rock of the island through the nature trail, you would see the real owners of the island – the rock pigeons. Some time you can capture the wonderful view of a bunch of small fish moving around the island. You can also enjoy having a sea bath. Do not forget to wear footwear as the sharp edges of the dead corals may hurt your legs

                                  Overview

You will begin your snorkeling tour from the harbor of Negombo at 7:30 am. Other timings can be arranged but the visibility of the seafloor gets lower later on in the day. In addition, many inhabitants of the sea hide in the shady crevices beyond sight as the sun climbs higher. Your boat ride will take up to 20 minutes to get to the best snorkeling spot in Negombo.

Snorkeling is the sport of swimming with a diving mask and snorkel tube on. Fins are often used for the feet too. The snorkel tube allows the swimmer to breathe for a long time with his or her face underwater. As such, the sport is used to view the ocean floor and colorful sea life, amongst other things.

The sea off the Negombo coast is shallow for a fair distance; protected by coral reefs that act as breakwaters. This has enabled many types of fish that live in shallows, and the life forms that live on the seafloor such as sea anemones, sea cucumbers, starfish, corals (which are formed by polyps) to take residence there.

While snorkeling in Negombo you will be able to see many beautiful sights such as colorful and bright living corals, the large silver-blue shoals of small fish, that hermit crab that peeks out for prey, the pretty flowery looking anemones that hide danger in their midst, the clownfish that wanders amongst the strands fearlessly and much more. If you bring an underwater camera, you will be able to take some great photos too.

After finishing your snorkeling session you will be returning to the harbor, where the boat will drop you off at 9:30 am completing the tour.

Please note: that swimming skills are required to take part in the Snorkeling Adventure.

The largest of the whales can be seen surfacing from time to time particularly when they come inshore to feed just 3.5 km from the shoreline between Norochcholai and Talawila, which is located directly in front of our resort. These include the Bryde’s whale, Eden’s whale and the largest mammal in the world, the blue whale that can grow up to 28 m long.

Further afield in deep blue water and mostly about 4-5 nm from shore additional species of toothed whales and oceanic dolphins are likely to be seen. These include the sperm whale, dwarf and pygmy sperm whales, Risso’s dolphins, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, Fraser’s dolphins, spotted dolphins and striped dolphins.

The sight of some of these enigmatic cetaceans is both breath taking and spellbinding and offers a truly humbling experience. A permit issued by the Department of Wildlife Conservation is required for every individual going out on marine mammal watching excursions. You may wish to enhance your sea excursion expedition with a marine mammal naturalist onboard.
